The volleyball team was swept 25-16, 25-21, 25-15 Thursday night by the Texas State Bobcats.
The Roadrunners started the first set strong against the Bobcats, matching them point for point and had a score of 8-6 early in the set. The Bobcats responded with 10 unanswered points that left the Roadrunners with an 8-16 deficit, and they were unable to recover.
After pulling ahead, the Bobcats never looked back. They ended the set 9 points ahead of the Roadrunners.
The Roadrunners came back ready to fight in the second set.
Kills by Elise Huskey, Andee Josserand, Briana Mason, Brittney Malloy, Stefanie Robbins and Whitney Walls all helped keep the score close throughout the set. However, their efforts were not enough to propel the Roadrunners to a win. With a second set in the bag, the Bobcats were poised to win the match. After intermission, the Bobcats finished off the Roadrunners, holding them off by 10 points.
The Roadrunners hit only .118 percent and scored just 37 points to the Bobcats 58.5 points.
“We just didn’t execute. We only hit a hundred for a match”, Coach Groff said. “We just had no offense”.
Saturday against the UTA Mavericks, the Roadrunners were the ones doing the sweeping.
The Roadrunners were offensively superior to the Mavericks. Mason led the charge with 6 kills that helped the Roadrunners win the set 25-22.
In the second set, the Roadrunners dominated the Mavericks. The Roadrunners started off the set 5-0, and they kept their lead throughout the set. They ended the set 25-18 and took a two set lead.
The third set was basically a replay of the second set with the exception that the Mavericks scored one more point in the Roadrunners 25-19 win.
The win on Saturday would not have been possible if the entire team had not given so much effort. Kendra Rowland, Whitney Walls, Stefanie Robbins and Elise Huskey had a combined total of 30 kills, and libero Kelsey Jewasko had 20 assists and 5 digs to help the team pull off the win.
“It was awesome. It was a great match today, I felt great, the sets were on and we played great as a team,” Robbins said after sweeping the Mavericks.
Next up for the Roadrunners is the Southland Conference that UTSA will be hosting at the Convocation Center from Nov. 20-22. The Roadrunners enter the conference in the sixth seed and will start the tournament against third seed Stephen F. Austin on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
