UTSA used a sweep of the Bearkats of Sam Houston State to end their three game losing streak. The sweep started March 20, when the Runners shutout the ‘Kats 12-0.
The top of the second marked the beginning of the Runners’ shut out when they scored three runs.
Things started going downhill for SHSU quickly after that.
UTSA added four more runs in the top of the third to take a 6-0 lead. UTSA added the final nail in the Bearkats’ coffin in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs and taking a commanding 12-0 lead.
The game was called after the seventh inning due to the Southland Conference’s run rule.
Saturday’s game two was much closer, but UTSA was still on the right side of a 10-6 final score.
Ryan Hutson hit his first home run of the season. The two-run homer added to the Runners’ lead, giving UTSA an 8-1 lead in the top of the third.
UTSA would score two more runs in the tops of the fourth and fifth innings to wrap up the scoring.
The final game of the series looked as though it would be a repeat of Friday’s blowout, with UTSA coming out of the gates and scoring two runs to take an early 2-0 lead. The Runners wouldn’t score again until the top of the fifth, scoring two runs and giving them the 4-0 lead. The ‘Kats struck back, cutting the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth and then took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
However, UTSA would wrap up their scoring when they responded with four runs in the top of the eighth to regain the lead, 8-5. SHSU added another run in the bottom of the eighth to make the final score 8-6.
Head Coach Sherman Corbett commented on his team’s weekend success after the game.
“This was obviously a big weekend for us to get things turned around, and we did just that.
We really came out and executed well for the most part of this weekend, but there is still room for improvement. Hopefully, this will be the start of a long run of success for us as we enter a critical stretch of the season.”
For the first time in two weeks, UTSA will be at home as they take on UT-Pan American on March 24 at 3:00 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
