Men’s tennis picks up two wins

During the week of Feb. 24, the UTSA Roadrunner men’s tennis team faced the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders, Laredo Community College Palominos and the Texas Tech Red Raiders, the 18th nationally ranked team.

In the first match of the week against the Islanders, Juri Reckow improved to 7-0 in singles, which earned the ‘Runners a close 3-4 win. Reckow faced Ryuya Ata, a four-time Southland Conference Player of the Week. Reckow lost the first match 7-6 but fought back in the second match to win a close game, 6-4. Reckow had a strong showing in the deciding match beating Ata 6-3. The ‘Runners also won their doubles points when Joao Alcantra and Sebastian Rodriguez won 7-5 and Reckow and Javier Gonzalez won 6-1. The ‘Runners picked up wins in singles with Sebastian Rodriguez winning 6-2, 6-3 and Gonzalez winning, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In the second match of the week against the Palominos, the ‘Runners won 5-2. Reckow won his eighth straight singles match of the year, making him 8-0 on the season. Rodriguez also picked up a singles win with two 6-0 victories, making him 6-2 on the season. Gonzalez and Alan Sanson also picked up big wins in singles, which helped to push the ‘Runners over the Palominos. In doubles, the ‘Runners won out with Joao Alcantra and Rodriguez winning 6-2, Reckow and Gonzalez winning 6-1 and Patrick Poestinger and Joao Ceolin winning a close 7-6.

The final match of the week saw nationally ranked Texas Tech sweep the ‘Runners 4-0. In doubles, Reckow and Gonzalez fell 6-1 and the same happened to Poestinger and Ceolin with a 6-3 loss. The Red Raiders also claimed points in singles with wins over Rodriguez and Sanson.

This week, the ‘Runners will be taking a roadtrip to Las Vegas to take on the Loyola Marymount University Lions on March 7 and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Rebels on March 8.
