The UTSA women’s golf team opened their season off with an 8th place finish at the Trinity Forest Invitational. Out of the 14 teams that attended this event there were seven nationally ranked teams including the number one ranked Baylor University. Even with such steep opposition UTSA was able to place ahead of No. 35 Missouri State and No. 38th BYU finishing 44 strokes over par (72/6,258 yards).
UTSA was tied for 8th for most of the tournament until the final day when they were able to secure sole possession with a combined team score of 908. In the final round UTSA finished five strokes over par with a team score of 293 which was their best round by far. With an eight stroke lead over Washington and Nebraska and only finishing one stroke behind Tulsa, UTSA finished in 8th in their season opener.
UTSA was led by Camryn Carreon who tied for 11th with a six over par and an overall score of 222, her second-best finish. Carreon opened Monday with a 76 only to improve upon that by two strokes in the next round. On Tuesday she recorded an even-par 72 with six birdies in the final round. With such an impressive start to the season she was able to win C-USA co-Golfer of the Week.
All of the women’s team posted solid results with Nicole Polivchak placing 22nd with an overall score of 226, Ana Gonzalez tying for 30th with an overall score of 229, Hannah Holzmann finishing 39th with an overall score of 231 and Katie Mexsen tying for 67th with an overall score of 241.
UTSA women’s golf will return to the links again Monday and Tuesday Feb. 8-9 in the Texas State Invitational at Plum Creek Golf Course. Make sure to tune in to see the UTSA Roadrunners as they continue their season.
