The Roadrunners concluded their 2021 tennis seasons this past weekend at the Conference USA Championships.
This past Friday, the UTSA men’s team fell to No. 5 seed, Charlotte, 3-4 at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex in the quarterfinals. The No. 4 seeded Roadrunners demonstrated strong gameplay in doubles. Striking early, doubles pair Javier Gonzalez and Garrett Skelly picked up the first win of the day, defeating Charlotte’s Henry Lieberman and Leo Menezes 6-3. On court two, Joao Ceolin and Slava Gulin found similar success, winning 6-4 against Ignasi de Rueda and Ben Wayand.
Ceolin and Gulin also stood out in singles. Winning his 13th singles match of the year, Ceolin defeated his opponent 7-5 6-4. Gulin, competing on court three, won his first set 6-4. His opponent Stefanos Savva came back 6-3 and claimed the second set. In the third and deciding set, Gulin swept his opponent 6-2.
In the first round of the Conference USA Championship, the UTSA women’s team was defeated 4-0 by UAB. Motivation and intensity were high for UAB in doubles. Aleksandra Zlatarova and Sophie Omoworare closed out their match 4-6. On court three, Catalina Cabrique and Alexandra Weir found themselves in a 6-7 outcome. The settling tiebreaker concluded in UAB’s favor 7-4.
In singles competition, UAB claimed the first point of the match when Laura Munoz-Baroja fell 6-0 2-6 to Annalisa Smith. Cabrique’s match went to a tiebreaker after her opponent Sydney Clarke deadlocked her at 6-7. Clarke gained the win with a tight 9-7 decision in the tiebreaker. On court two, Aleksandra Zlatarova closed out her hard-fought match, losing 0-6 6-1 5-7. Three of the singles matches, spearheaded by Jasmin Starr, Alexandra Weir and Keegan McCain, remained unfinished.
Overall, the women’s team finished their season 9-11. The men’s team concluded with a 13-8 record for the 2021 season.
