Men’s golf finishes fifth at tightly fought Conference USA Championship

The UTSA men’s golf team finished fifth in the lineup for the Conference USA Championship, Wednesday, April 28 at the Texarkana Country Club. Finishing fifth out of 13 teams, the Roadrunners tallied a four under par performance for the par 72 course.

Falling behind Middle Tennessee, North Texas, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Charlotte, UTSA was three strokes from a fourth-place finish, narrowly missing out on the matchplay round. Hitting a team-best 283 in the first round, the ‘Runners maintained a high 200 score throughout the three-round tournament. After posting the first-round best score, the team posted a 290 on the second day, followed by a 287 on the final day.

Chad Sewell led the charge for the ‘Runners, finishing 12th overall on the leaderboard with a 214-total score. Carding a team-best 68 in the first round, Sewell’s efforts were highlighted by scoring five holes under par. Continuing his trend of near-par scoring, Sewell marked a 74 in the second round, followed by a 72 in the third.

Collin Clark landed second-best for UTSA on the board two strokes behind Sewell with a 216. Shooting a par score in the first round and a two-over performance in the second with a 74, Clark’s slate was highlighted by a 70-stroke round. Starting the front nine two under par at 34, six birdies propelled him to a tied place at 18th.

Finishing tied for 23rd, Christian Fanfelle and Hunter Bott evened at 217 for the tournament. Bott landed second on the UTSA lineup in the first round with a score of 70. The back nine of the opening round saw Bott marking a two under par. Fanfelle topped Bott in the second and third rounds with a 72 for both.

Michael Rome rounded out the roster card for the ‘Runners. Concluding the tournament with a 221, Rome went 77, 71 and 73 for the three rounds. Leading his scorecard in the second round with four under par holes, Rome concluded the tournament 36th overall.

Statistically, the ‘Runners were solid on the par three, fours and fives, where they ranked in the top five in scoring. Individually, Bott led all participants on par threes, where he was one under par.

Concluding the conference trials fifth overall, the ‘Runners will find out their NCAA postseason fate Wednesday, May 5. The NCAA Regional Tournament will be held May 17-19.
