Popular Honors Thesis Projects: Regenerative Therapy

Marissa Weschler’s, a senior biological engineering major, thesis is titled, “Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Exposed to Alternating Electric Current.” Weschler was motivated to take up this research because she believes there is a need for new scientific developments and advancement in biomedical applications. Her research looks specifically at the use of stem cells to treat various diseases as well as repairing and regenerating damaged tissue. Weschler’s project is unique in that she was alternating electric currents to stimulate bone-forming cells. These discoveries have potential to impact biotechnology, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
