Following a seven-game winning streak and a series sweep against their division rival Philadelphia Phillies, the New York Mets have become the hottest team in baseball. The team’s early-season success can be credited to their steady starting pitching and bullpen, along with All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor and first baseman Pete Alonso.
Coming into the 2025 MLB season, there were lofty expectations for the Mets after signing superstar outfielder Juan Soto and extending Alonso. New York looks unbothered by these expectations as they have started the season with a 19-9 record — the best in Major League Baseball.
Though the offense has looked slightly underwhelming. With Soto batting just .245 with a .762 OPS and third baseman Mark Vientos batting a measly .190 paired with a .622 OPS, Alonso and Lindor have been putting the team on their backs. The infield duo has been extremely valuable for the Mets, combining for 11 home runs and 40 RBIs. As a team, New York has scored 109 runs and collected 104 RBIs while missing infielder Jeff McNeil and catcher Francisco Alvarez due to injuries.
New York’s starting pitching and bullpen have stepped up and kept their offense in the game, posting a combined ERA of 2.45, which is best in the league through the season’s first month. After injuries to Frankie Montas, Paul Blackburn and their ace Sean Manaea, fans were concerned about their starting pitching going into the season, but they have been lights out so far. Kodai Senga, Griffin Canning, David Peterson and Tylor Megill have been anchors for the Mets and have put their offense and bullpen in advantageous positions.
The bullpen has been nothing short of phenomenal. Relievers Max Kranick, Huascar Brazobán, and Reed Garrett, along with veterans A.J. Minter and Ryne Stanek all have ERAs below three to start the season. The only problem with this group so far has been closer Edwin Díaz. In 11 innings, Díaz has posted an uncharacteristic 4.91 ERA, but it hasn’t stopped the Mets from winning close games. New York currently has a 7-2 record in one-run games and a 2-1 record in extra innings.
As it looks right now, the New York Mets are the most complete team in baseball and are only going to get better. Once Soto’s performance at the plate improves and Manaea comes back from injury, it could be a scary sight for the rest of Major League Baseball. The other top teams in the league like the Dodgers, Padres and Cubs have star power, but they don’t have the consistent starting pitching and bullpen like New York does. The Mets are the best team in baseball right now and will continue to be going forward.
