Take a deep breath and avoid stress

Feeling stressed out about finals? Or are you struggling in the sea of assignments that are inconveniently due the last week before the study days?

Stress is a common feeling for everyone, especially in students. Stress harms our thinking and studying ability and sometimes is hard to manage. But don’t worry because here are some tips to help you relax just in time for finals.

1. Organize yourself: Find a planner or a piece of paper and list what you have to study for the day. Start with the final exams that are coming up first, and then rank which final exam is the most difficult. If they are all top-priority, then list which exam will take the least time to study. That way you can focus the rest of your time on the lengthy final exam material.

2. Restrict the amount of caffeine you drink: those energy drinks, sodas, or coffees help keep you awake, but that’s only temporary. There’s a certain amount of caffeine your body can take until the caffeine becomes ineffective. You’ll grow more tired and irritated, causing you to lose focus when studying. According to Santa Clara University’s Wellness Center, drinking more water will help you stay awake and active.

3. Praise yourself: Give yourself positive feedback when completing a review or managing to avoid distractions such as Facebook or Tumblr. You worked hard, so give credit to yourself for staying on task. Also, acknowledging yourself will give you the strength to continue with other reviews.

4. Take deep breaths: When you stress, you become nervous and your body feels tense. All you have to do is breathe. According to the Santa Clara University Wellness Center, your body tends to stiffen when you’re breathing short, shallow breaths. Take a moment to relax yourself so you can focus on what you need to study for and then reward yourself.

5. Walk it out: If you’re stuck in the middle of a review, then it’s best to take a step back from what you’re doing. You won’t be able to understand what you’re studying if you’re forcing it into your mind. Go on a 10 to 15 minute walk outside and clear your head. Walking will not only relax you, but also help you practice a healthy lifestyle. If you’re not in the mood for walking, then try doing something you enjoy that can distract you a bit.

6.Sleep well: Don’t pull all-nighters for studying. If you are not well rested, then you can’t expect to remember much. Staying awake all night is unhealthy for you and wastes the energy you need for studying. You could also tend to forget things like the ParScore exam form you need to take the exam or the review sheet you made for yourself. Manage your time by using a planner or a list and cut off studying time at 11 p.m.
