The UTSA Libraries Special Collections department is requesting donations of flyers, signs and other memorabilia used in the recent Women’s and Martin Luther King Jr. Day march. These items will be archived in the JPL.

“Saving signs from the women’s march and the MLK march is a great idea,” sophomore interdisciplinary studies major Samantha De Leon said, “whether you agree with the protests or not, it’s part of our city’s history.”

The UTSA Libraries Special Collections also believe there is adequate reason and historical significance to saving flyers, posters and signs from the marches.

“Ephemeral items such as political posters and protest signs provide first hand documentation and evidence of social and political events, ideas and actions in San Antonio,” Amy Rushing, head of special collections, stated.

Many UTSA students participated in the marches.

“Peaceful protests have more action than violent ones, and to be a part of a civil rights movement has brought so much excitement for me to experience,” junior marketing major Audrey Castor said.

In both marches, students used clever signs and posters to voice their opinions. Library staff seek to gain copyright of the donations so they can copy and reuse the protesters’ work.

Donations can be made at the following locations and times:

– UTSA’s John Peace Library information desk, One UTSA Circle Jan. 30-Feb 10, M-F from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

-UTSA’s Downtown Campus Library, Buena Vista Street Building, 501 W. César E. Chávez Blvd. Sat., Jan. 28, Feb. 4 and Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

-Rep. Diego Bernal’s District Office, 126 W. Rector St., Suite 114. Fri., Jan. 27, Feb. 3 and Feb. 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
