Ask a Professor: Dr. Patrick Kelly

What do you think your students would be most surprised to learn about you?

I struggled in my first year of college.  I had very bad study habits and was undisciplined.  By my senior year though, I had figured out the system.  That is why I can empathize and am very sympathetic to my students.

Have you always wanted to teach?

I have always loved history.  In about 11th or 12th grade I was given a personality test and scored off the charts for the profession of College Professor.  This always stayed with me.  I have also always felt comfortable speaking in front of large crowds.

    Where are you originally from?

I grew up in Austin, TX.

How does San Antonio compare to that city?

I really love the diversity of San Antonio.  I think the diversity of the students at UTSA is a reflection of Texas today and in the future.

Name three bands that were popular when you were in college.

I used to go to the famous Armadillo World Headquarters in South Austin.  It was a concert hall that was basically a converted warehouse and used to be the home of The National Guard Armory.  I saw Patti Smith, The Ramones, The Talking Heads and Elvis Costello play there before they became famous.

    What are your hobbies?

First and foremost, I’m a U.S. Historian but right now I’m enjoying learning about Roman history and the Roman Empire.

What are your favorite sports teams?

I love the Spurs.  I’m also a lifelong fan of the Longhorns but that will change on game day when the Road Runners play.

What is your favorite type of food or dish?

I like Italian food.  One of my favorite restaurants is Piatti.

What are your favorite TV shows?

    Madmen & Friday Night Lights

    What is your favorite movie?

Mean Streets, The Searchers, & Lone Star

    What is your favorite book?

    The Lord of the Rings

Do you have any favorite sayings or quotes?

    Buy low, Sell high…

What’s the best advice that you would give to students?

    Learn a second language.
