UTSA’s men’s tennis team completed their regular season last Tuesday, April 26. The Roadrunners concluded with a 7-0 sweep over the University of Incarnate Ward (UIW) at the ‘Runners tennis center. UTSA earned No. 6 seed and challenged No. 3 seed Middle Tennessee University (MT) this past weekend, Friday, April 19-April 21. The ‘Runners fell in a narrow thriller against the host Middle Tennessee in the opener of the C-USA Championships, ending its seasons slate.
The singles won on all six courts facing the Cardinals. Highlights by comeback wins from Javier Rodriguez and Alan Sanson after dropping the first set. Rodriguez’ score was set at 3-6 6-4 10-8. Sanson swept his opponent to a finished score of 2-6 7-6 10-8. Kai Breitbach defeated his opponent 6-1 7-5. Joao Ceolin’s defeated 6-4 6-4. For Juri Reckow he completed his match at 6-4 7-5. Finally, Javier Gonzalez was last beat his opponent on the singles court at 6-2 6-4. Obviously, it was a very successful turn out for the singles teams.
Breitbach and Reckow played together in the doubles match, they were unsuccessful in finishing their match against UIW. Colin and Patrick Poestine beat their opponents and finished to a score of 6-4. Gonzalez and Sanson were tied at 5-5 with their opponents but came out on top to help the Runner’s take the 7-0 sweep. Ending their regular season with a win.
Since the Runner’s finished their regular season, they began their conference tournament in hosted by the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders.
UTSA dropped the doubles points but roared back to push the match in singles. Which earned wins from Reckow and Rodriguez to even the match at 2-2. Reckow’s score finished off to 7-6, (7-5), and 6-2. Rodriguez earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over MT. After Breitbach fell on the first court at 4-6, 3-6 making it 2-3 for the Runners, it came down to the finish on court two and court six which featured Ceolin and Sanson. Ceolin and his opponent were going back to back after each game, but ended with Ceolin falling, completing the score at 1-6, 6-3, 7-6, (7-5). Sanson was successful in his match finishing got to a score of 0-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Breitbach and Reckow were unsuccessful in their doubles match with a 1-6 score. Poestinger and Ceolin were not able to finish their match. Lastly, Sanson and Gonzalez lost their match, completing the tournament with a 2-6 score.
Obviously, the Runner’s had a very successful season. Sanson improved to 12-6 on the year with the singles win and Reckow moved to 15-6 and Rodriguez 17-5. Even though the Runner’s were knocked off in conference by Middle Tennessee, they played a good season. Finishing the 2019 year on a good note!
