UTSA vs. #40 Oral RobertsSAN ANTONIO – Oral Roberts starting pitcher Mark Serrano held UTSA hitless for 7.2 innings and the 40th-ranked Golden Eagles withstood a late Roadrunners rally to hold on for a 5-3 victory on Friday night in the third game of the UTSA Baseball Classic at Wolff Stadium.
UTSA vs. ArmyRight-handed starter Bradley Chovanec tossed 7.2 strong innings and UTSA’s offense backed his effort with 16 hits and the Roadrunners cruised to an 8-2 victory on Saturday night at Wolff Stadium in game six of the UTSA Baseball Classic. UTSA improved to 1-1 with its first win of the season, while the Black Knights dropped to 0-3.
Chovanec (1-0) scattered seven hits and allowed just one run in the 91-pitch gem. The Burton native, who struck out six and walked none, retired the first nine hitters he faced and 17 of the first 19 overall, which was one over the minimum through six frames. He then wiggled out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam to start the seventh by inducing a line out to shortstop and a inning-ending double play to third base.
The offense staked Chovanec to a 4-0 lead with single runs in the third and fourth frames and two more in the fifth. Senior first baseman Trent Lockwood’s bases-clearing double to left field highlighted a four-run seventh that put the game out of reach.
All nine starters reached base with eight rapping out hits. Sophomores Tim Palincsar and Ryan Rummel led the way with three hits apiece and Lockwood drove home four runs on the night. Four other Roadrunners – Lockwood and juniors Lance Brown, James Keithley and Aaron Powell – also had multi-hit performances.
UTSA vs. #19 Louisiana-LafayetteUTSA scored five runs in the fifth inning and rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat No. 19 Louisiana-Lafayette, 5-2, in the seventh game of the 2008 UTSA Baseball Classic on Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field. It was the team’s second consecutive win after dropping Friday’s season opener to No. 40 Oral Roberts.
After junior left fielder Jose Hernandez popped out to first to start the frame, senior catcher Zach Etheredge was hit by a pitch and sophomore third baseman Ryan Rummel then drew a four-pitch walk. That brought up junior right fielder Aaron Powell and he lined Glass’ 0-1 offering into the right center field gap for a triple and that tied the game at two. Junior shortstop Lance Brown followed with a run-scoring single through the left side of the infield and UTSA took the lead for good.
“This was a quality win for us,” head coach Sherman Corbett said following the victory. “Louisiana-Lafayette is a very good team and a lot of our players were here last year when they stuck it to us in the season-opening series. I was really proud of how the guys battled and the pitchers did a great job of keeping us in the game.
UTSA vs. Texas TechTexas Tech exploded for 10 runs in the top of the first and Red Raiders starting pitcher Cory Large was perfect for 5.2 innings in a 16-6 victory against UTSA on Monday afternoon in the final game of the season-opening UTSA Baseball Classic at Wolff Stadium.
