Sophomore Danye Holmes tossed a complete-game five-hitter and launched a game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift UTSA to a 2-1 victory over Northwestern State on the final day of the Getterman Classic held at Getterman Stadium.
With the international tiebreaker rule in effect (last out of previous inning placed on second base), the Demons took a 1-0 lead in the pitcher’s duel on a single by Tiffany Ward in the top of the first extra frame. Holmes, who was not charged with the team earned run, got out of the inning with a groundout and a lineout, stranding a runner at first.
In the bottom of the eighth, freshman Ashley Kappler was placed on second and moved to third on sacrifice bunt by freshman Amber Anderson. Holmes then drove an 0-2 offering from Kelee Grimes high and deep over the fence in right field to give the Roadrunners (4-6) their second win of the three-day tournament..
Holmes, who was named to the all-tournament team, struck out five and allowed just five hits and three walks in running her record to 1-2 on the season. Grimes fanned five against zero walks and allowed just one earned run on eight hits in falling to 1-7 for the Demons (1-9).
It was the second round tripper of the season for Holmes, who finished 2-for-4 with the two RBIs. Junior Rudi Cantu also collected a pair of hits, while Anderson and senior Leanne Risberg each had a double.
The Roadrunners will host a doubleheader against North Texas on Tuesday, Feb. 17, in their first home games of the year. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
