This past week on Jan. 28, and Jan. 30 the UTSA Roadrunners women’s basketball team (2-13, C-USA 0-10) was unable to end their losing streak, which is now amounting to a total of 11 games in a row. With this weekend being back-to-back losses against UTEP, the ‘Runners are now 2-13 (0-10 in Conference USA), pushing them further out of the playoff picture.

This past weekend, the Roadrunners took on the UTEP Miners, in which the Miners took both games in convincing fashion. The first game ended 56-82, Miners in a game that was never even close with UTSA once again suffering from a poor first half and lacking the necessary starting offense to make up for their non existent bench points, the Miners took an 18-point lead going into the half and only added to it. With the first game being not much more than a blowout, the ‘Runners looked to end their losing streak in their second game against the Miners, in which UTSA once again fell flat. However, this game was much closer, with the halftime score being 30-28, Miners. Unfortunately for the ‘Runners, a massive collapse took place in the third quarter when the Miners were able to score 21 to the ‘Runners’ six. With a 17-point lead for the Miners going into the fourth, the ‘Runners were unable to make a comeback, resulting in another loss for the ‘Runners, 67-52. 

While things look bleak for the ‘Runners, there is still hope for a playoff run. With Conference USA allowing 12 teams to make playoffs and there only being 14 teams in the conference, that means that UTSA just needs to beat one team in their division. Currently, UTSA sits four games away from UAB, which is only 2-6 in the conference. If UTSA can win their upcoming games, then the chance that they can make the playoffs is still technically alive. Now the likelihood that the ‘Runners are able to turn things around is slim, but not zero. The ‘Runners next opponents are the FIU Panthers who currently sit 7-7 (4-4 in conference) which has them 3rd in group A. If the ‘Runners are somehow able to fix their lack of bench points and poor shooting percentages by Feb. 5 when they take on the Panthers, then it may still be possible for the ‘Runners to make the playoffs. 

Make sure to watch as the UTSA Roadrunners fight for their playoff hopes and look to break their losing streak with Friday and Saturday games against the FIU Panthers. These games will be on at 7 p.m. on Feb. 5 and 5 p.m. on Feb. 6.
