Men’s Tennis ready to continue last year’s succes

UTSA’s men’s tennis team is back for another season of continued success. The men’s tennis team successfully won last year’s Southland Conference Tournament Championship in Corpus Christi and is determined to win it again.

“We’re really working hard to win this year’s conference again,” said Coach Jeff Kader, “I’m putting a lot of effort on fitness with conditioning and weights. I want the players to play for a long period of time without getting tired.”

The men’s tennis team hosted an invitational at the UTSA tennis courts on Saturday, Oct. 9 and Sunday, Oct. 10. The Roadrunners welcomed Laredo Community College, St. Edwards and Texas A&M for this two day event.

“We’re trying to just do the little things to get ready,” said senior Max Stratmann, senior accounting major. “Conditioning on and off the courts, weights and match playing all help to get us focused and ready for tournaments.”

The men’s tennis team’s ultimate goal is to continue winning tournaments and receive a national ranking.

“Our goal is to win as many tournaments as we can, win conference again and try to win the NCAA’s (National Collegiate Athletic Association),” said Tyler Brown, sophomore major undeclared.

“I’m trying to get the team motivated by getting them fired up and getting them to have a killer instinct mentality,” Kader said. “By reminding them of the rewards of winning, who they’re competing and why, are all ways I try to keep them motivated to work hard and win.”

The team posted a strong showing on the opening day of their fall invitational on Saturday. Stratmann,  junior Daniel Moser, sophomore Martin Ayala and freshmen Oliver Breininger all won two singles matches.

The team was just as victorious on Sunday’s invitational.  Ayala and Stratmann both won championship matches of their respective matches.

“I think I’ll be doing much better this season. My serve and movement speed is much stronger and faster, which I think will help me a lot,” Brown said.

With coach Kader’s big emphasis on fitness and conditioning, the men’s tennis team is lasting longer on the courts. “Because of all the conditioning we’re doing, our stamina has really improved and we’re playing longer without getting tired,” Stratmann said.
