Volleyball falls during UTSA Classic,  drops preseason record to 4-9

This past weekend the UTSA Roadrunners hosted No. 3 Washington and Middle Tennessee for the UTSA Classic. (Rice was scheduled to play, but was unable to due to an influenza outbreak on the team) The tournament ended on a sour note for the Roadrunners with losses to both teams.

The Roadrunners opened the tournament Thursday night against the Washington Huskies, who are undefeated.

Led by Becky Perry, who had 12 kills and 4 blocks the Huskies held off the Roadrunners to come off with a 25-13, 25-14, 25-20 victory.

Briana Mason led the Roadrunners with 7 kills, 1 block solo and 2 block assists.

The Huskies dominated the match with a hitting percentage of .383 limiting the Roadrunners to .087.

Saturday’s conclusion of the UTSA classic had the Roadrunners facing off against Middle Tennessee.

The Blue Raiders swept the Roadrunners with a 25-12, 25-14, 25-21 victory.

The Blue Raiders had early leads in the first two sets and averaged .308 and .364 hitting percentages.

The third set looked to be a Roadrunner comeback. The Runners kept the score tight at the start of the set, but the Blue Raiders answered back with a five point rally that put the score at 13-19.

Unable to hold off a sweep the Roadrunners lost the final set and closed the tournament 0-2, dropping their preseason record to 4-9.

UTSA start Southland Conference games on Sept. 24 against UT Arlington (4-8) at 7:00 p.m. at Texas Hall.
