‘Runners lose series 1-2 against Lady Techsters

The UTSA softball team (10-20) went to Ruston, La. to play Louisiana Tech (22-15) in their third conference series, losing two of the three games to the Lady Techsters.
The Roadrunner’s first game was on April 1, where they looked to be controlling the game. The Techsters had bases loaded with two outs, but a foul out ended the inning and both teams were still at zero. The teams went scoreless all the way through the fifth inning until LA Tech hit a grand slam to go up 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth.
The ‘Runners came out in the top of the seventh inning with Katlyn Morado hitting a double to center field and Erykah Guerro getting on first due to being hit by a pitch. Ciarra Mata got a hit, advancing Morado to third and Guerro being tagged out at second. Kat Ibarra singled to left field and Morado advanced home to make the game 4-1. Camryn Robillard hit a single to left field which made bases loaded. Riley Grunberg then singled to center field with Ibarra and Mata scoring to make it a one-score game, 4-3. A ground out to second base by Emily Dear was the third out, ending the rally and the game.
UTSA’s Jamie Gilbert pitched all six innings and had four total strikeouts. The Roadrunners had five total hits and two strikeouts as a team.
With a much better start the next day, the ‘Runners went up 3-0 in the top of the first. Marena Estell hit a home run to right-center, getting three RBIs with Ibarra and Grunberg scoring. In the second inning, Robillard hit a double, getting two RBIs with Ibarra and Mata scoring, but Robillard got out at third. The Techsters scored three runs in the second, cutting the score to 5-3. The score was 6-4 from the fourth inning until the bottom of the seventh, giving the Lady Techsters one last shot. They did manage to score one run but got a third out grounding to third with UTSA winning 6-5, tying the series 1-1. The ‘Runners did not strike out in the game and had five RBIs.
On day three, the Roadrunners found themselves down early, losing 4-0 in the bottom of the second. The ‘Runners scored in the fourth inning, with Grunberg getting a single to left field. Estell hit the ball over the right wall, getting a two-run homer. UTSA scored again in the fifth inning, with a solo home run by Grunberg to make the score 4-3. The Lady Techsters answered in the sixth by adding three runs, going up 7-3. Robillard scored from a pop fly by Dear, but, unfortunately, did not pull off a rally. The final score was 7-4, with UTSA losing the series 2-1.
Grunberg led the team with three of the team’s 10 hits. UTSA had three total strikeouts and four RBIs.
The Roadrunner’s next game will be Tuesday, April 5, against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (12-20).
