Seventh straight Volleyball victory, ninth sweep

UTSA Reports

Junior Connie Picard had 11 kills and six blocks as the UTSA volleyball team continued to roll in a 30-17, 30-23, 30-19 victory at Southeastern Louisiana Saturday afternoon at University Center.

With the win, the Roadrunners extend their winning streak to seven matches and improve to 11-6 overall and 8-2 in the Southland Conference. The Lady Lions fall to 6-12 and 2-7. UTSA now has won eight if its last night matches and with the sweep have taken 21 of the last 22 games in that stretch.

Picard posted 11 kills and hit .500 for the match to go along with six blocks, including three solo. She also registered three service aces and finished with a team-high 18.5 points. Junior Meagan Daniel turned in 12 kills and 11 digs for her 14th double-digit kills match and eighth double-double of the season. Junior Brittany Hildebrand and redshirt freshman Victoria Prior pitched in with 10 and eight kills, respectively.

UTSA broke open a tight game one at 9-8 with a 5-1 run in building a 14-9 lead. The Lions fought back to within three at 15-12 but the Roadrunners used a 15-5 run in cruising home to a 30-17 victory. UTSA out hit SLU, .385-.154, in the game behind six kills from Prior and five from Hildebrand.

The Lions controlled most of the momentum early in game two, jumping out to a 14-9 lead. UTSA rallied to tie at 18-all on a Hildebrand kill and eventually took its first lead at 21-20 on a good attack by Daniel. From there, three UTSA blocks, including two solos by Picard, and two Picard aces helped key a 9-3 run that gave the Roadrunners a 30-23 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Roadrunners wasted little time in building a comfortable lead in game three as they blitzed out to a 12-5 start. SLU got as close as four at 15-11 but UTSA pushed the lead to double digits at 25-13 on five combined kills from Daniel and junior setter DeeDee Strickland. The Roadrunners breezed home for the 30-19 win, improving their series over SLU to 11-5.

The Roadrunners return to action next Friday, Oct. 21, when they travel to Texas-Arlington.
