Coming back home after a four game losing streak, the Roadrunner volleyball team was hungry for a win. On Wednesday night, they faced Texas A&M Corpus Christi (TAMUCC), which has the same conference record (1-8) as the Roadrunners.

Points went back and forth throughout the game; TAMUCC took the first time out with a score of 14-11, Roadrunners ahead. Kendra Rowland started off her big night with 11 kills in the first game. As the game winded down, UTSA took a time out with the score 29-29. They rallied after the time out to win the game 32-30.

Game two began with the Runners falling behind early when the Islanders took a lead of 3-8 at the first time out. The Islanders tied the match up winning 24-30.

In the following game, consecutive kills from Rowland and Prior gave the Runners the lead of 18-14. The Runners kept the lead and won 30-28, making the ending of this game suspenseful.

In the fourth game, the Islanders went up and eventually won 22-30 bringing both teams to the final fifth game of the night.

The fifth game was underway with the Runners getting two kills from Briana Mason. The Runners took the lead at 12-8. Rowland and Prior ended the game with a kill each along with an Islander attack error to give the Runners the final game and win the match.

The MVP of this five-game match goes to Kendra “the California Crippler” Rowland tying her career high with an astonishing 29 kills and 15 digs.

Friday night the Runners had their sights set on the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana Friday night. The Runners were ready to make these cats meow.

Briana Mason started the game off with an opening kill.

The Runners got help from Valorie Rogers, who racked up three kills along with Rowland and Prior collecting five kills each. The Runners finished the game with a score of 30-26. Jordan White would help get the win with her five point serving streak.

Game two would end up even better for the Runners, as they started off the game 10-3. Mason and Prior added a few “wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am” kills and continued to claw away at the Lions.

Prior had seven hard hitting kills that had so much force, it knocked a Lion player down. White ended the game with seven consecutive service points, two of them being aces to upset the Lions 30-15.

Prior continued to dominate the game with a total of eight kills in game three. The final score was 31-29 with a block to seal the deal by Mason and Prior.

“The team played really well with a totally new line up,” head coach Laura Groff said. “We really took it to them. They could not stop our hard attacks.”

Rebecca Hrapmann set up 31 perfect assists to help the win. White also collected 16 assists and an outstanding three service aces. Audrey Hiser contributed with a match high of 19 digs. Rowland collected yet another double-double of the year with 10 kills and 13 digs. Prior had an outstanding 20 hard-hitting kills alone.

The UTSA volleyball team is now on a three-game winning streak after hosting and beating Nicholls State (NSU) in three straight games this past Saturday.

The Runners came out ready to win as they quickly went up 5-0 before NSU called their first time out. The Colonels’ break was effective as they went on a 4-9 run to tie up the game.

The tie served as a wake-up call for UTSA as they regained the lead and did not relinquish it again in the game. UTSA would close out the game, winning 30-23.

UTSA started out slow in the second game. They allowed NSU to go up 2-7 before digging their way out.

Three great plays from middle-hitter Valorie Rogers, who also had a team-high, 13 kills, brought the Runners back to lead 10-9. Once they gained the lead, UTSA went on a 5-0 run to take a commanding lead at 20-12. This would prove to be insurmountable as the Runners would hold them off and win game two 30-20.

The Colonels went up 1-4 off of mistakes by the Runners.

UTSA kept trailing or tying until, after a quick redirection in a time out, they went on a 7-0 run off of great serving by setter Jordan White, who also led the team with 21 assists.

The UTSA defense came through as they held off their opponents for a final 3-point run to win 30-24.

The Roadrunners look to continue their win streak as they battle SFA at UTSA on Nov.1.
