After two full weeks of practice, the 1-3 Roadrunners are preparing for their inaugural American Athletic Conference matchup against the Temple Owls (2-3) on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Seventh-year quarterback Frank Harris has been out with a turf toe injury that was suffered in the week two Texas State game. UTSA played its third and fourth game without the veteran in the backfield, resulting in two-straight losses for the ‘Runners.
When asked about Harris’s status leading up to Saturday’s conference opener, coach Jeff Traylor said we will not know until after the pregame warm-ups.
“I would imagine if he’s feeling good in warmups, we’ll go. If he’s not, we won’t,” Traylor said. “You got to be smart. You don’t want to get [Harris] injured during the week, but you still have to get him ready. It will be a game-time decision.”
If Harris is not ready to go for Saturday’s critical AAC matchup against Temple, there are questions on who will run the Roadrunner offense. Backup Eddie Lee Marburger has gotten the starting nod the last two games, completing 61.7 percent of his passes and totaling a stat line of three touchdowns and 300 yards with one interception.
Colorado transfer Owen McCown replaced Marburger in the second half of the Tennessee game, completing 18 of 20 passes for 170 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
Coach Traylor did not speak on his game plan on who would be the starter if Harris is ruled out. Both Marburger and McCown have had impressive showings in their stints at quarterback in the wake of Harris’s toe injury, which sparks an interesting conversation on who will take the snap for the ‘Runners in an attempt to turn the season around.
Kickoff against Temple will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Lincoln Financial Field. The game can be streamed on ESPN+ and UTSA Sports Media Network, Ticket 760 AM.
