Another week went by with the women’s basketball team falling in two conference games, this time against two Louisiana universities — McNeese and Nicholls.

In one game, the Runners were never close to tying or leading; in the other, the Runners tied the game on a few occasions but were unable to pull out a victory.

McNeese State, 65; UTSA, 54.

The Roadrunner women’s basketball team welcomed the Southland power McNeese State Cowgirls to the Convocation Center, Wednesday, Feb. 15. The Roadrunners had not won a game since Jan. 21 when they knocked off I-35 rival Texas State. During that time the Runners had plummeted down the conference standings as the losses piled up.

The Cowgirls made themselves at home early and then held off the Runners.

The Runners played tough against the Cowgirls, but an early 8-2 run by the Cowgirls proved to be too much for the Runners to overcome as McNeese State coasted-never trailing-the rest of the way to a 65-54 victory.

The Runners came up short despite four players scoring in double figures. Kamra King and Ashley Gardner led the way with 13 points each.

The Cowgirls also had four scorers in double figures, Ashlynn Baggett led with 19 points.

The Roadrunners fell to 3-8 in conference with the loss to McNeese State.

Nicholls, 68; UTSA, 62.

Much like Wednesday’s game with McNeese, Saturday’s game with Nicholls was marked by a slow start from the Runners and a fast start by the Nicholls Colonels, who came out of the gates and built an early lead that the Runners were unable to overcome.

Unlike in Wednesday’s game, though, in Saturday’s game, the Runners were able to keep the score close enough to hang in the game. The Runners and Colonels ended the first half tied at 30.

The Runners were able to tie the game again at 46 before the Colonels rebuilt their lead, getting up by as much as 14, 65-51, before the Runners put up a valiant run that just ran out of time with the final score at 68-62 in favor of the Colonels.

The final tally for individual points saw the Runners’ Kamra King leading with 21 points. Sumar Leslie led the Colonels with 29 points.

The loss dropped the Runners, who have lost their last seven games, to 3-9 in Southland play. With four games remaining, it is shading near impossible that the Runners will return to the Southland Conference Tournament for a 12th consecutive year.
