Wichita State’s opposite hitter, Sophia Rohling, became the overall top scorer of UTSA’s weekend series against Wichita State at Charles Koch Arena. Rohling earned a total of 30 kills between the two matches against UTSA.
In the past 17 years, UTSA (15-13, 8-9 AAC) and Wichita State (19-7, 13-3) have met five times, and Wichita State has won four of those games. The lone Roadrunners win over the Shockers was in 2016.
Rohling led Wichita State to its third and fourth win over the ‘Runners in four sets 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18 on Friday and three sets 25-21, 25-16, 25-20 on Saturday.
Between two blocks, seven digs and six kills, outside hitter Caroline Krueger also proved to be a force to be reckoned with in the first match.
In Friday’s match, the Shockers were the first to score in every set, even in the second set, despite losing it. The Shockers fought to close the two-point lead the ‘Runners had made at 15-13, but a kill by Krueger once again helped to maintain the small lead the ‘Runners held over Wichita.
Serving errors made by the Shockers helped UTSA in their winning drive toward the end of the set. UTSA never surrendered the lead they gained early in the set and finished on top to take the second set, yet it did not provide them with the momentum they needed to win the match.
At the start of Saturday’s match, set one was fought wire-to-wire until four kills by Rohling gave the Shockers their last four points to win the set. From there, the Shockers took large leads in points to win it in three over the ‘Runners.
The Roadrunners will face UAB at 7 p.m. Friday at Bartow Arena.
