In their final non-conference game, UTSA defeated Prairie View A&M 103-87 in the Convocation Center. Guard Jordan Ivy-Curry led the way with 22 points in the Roadrunner blowout win. With the victory, the team has now won their sixth game of the season.
Center Trey Edmonds threw down a powerful slam dunk to get the Roadrunners started in the ballgame. He quickly threw down a second dunk, followed by an Isaiah Wyatt corner three. Threes continued to rain in for UTSA, with Curry and Dre Fuller Jr. both hitting from beyond the arc. A one-minute 8-0 run would give the team a 10-point lead six minutes into the first half. The lead would be held for the entirety of the half, as Prairie View Panthers failed to complete a first-period comeback.
Edmonds continued to score for the Roadrunners, going three for four with nine points. Despite the Panthers breaking into a two-man soft-pressure defense, the team managed to handle the ball carefully, only committing six turnovers within the game’s first half. The scoring quickly became lopsided with UTSA taking a 40-23 lead with three minutes left. While nearly every Roadrunner scored, Curry led the way with 13 points and five assists. Hitting a three to close out the period, the team led the Panthers 52-32 headed into the break.
The second half began with Prairie View guard Charles Smith receiving a technical foul for complaints about a call. The Roadrunners would send Christian Tucker to the line who hit both free throws along with a quick three on the next UTSA possession. The UTSA bench would also receive a technical foul shortly after for what seemed to be choice words toward the opposing players. Another technical would be called on the Panthers, as a player shoved a basketball towards Tucker’s face during a dead ball period. The lead continued to grow for UTSA, leading by as many as 27 in the second half. Curry would end up leading the team in scoring and assists, posting 22 points along with eight assists.
With eight minutes left in the game guard Adante’ Holiman fouled out after putting up six second-half points and four assists. Despite a 13-0 Prairie View run, UTSA would continue to hold onto their lead thanks to timely threes and key free throws. Tucker led the way, scoring 14 of his 16 points in the second half.
With Curry hitting two free throws to end the game, the Roadrunners would defeat the Panthers 103 to 87 in the Convocation Center. Improving to 6-7, the team will now look to officially start conference play.
UTSA will face The University of Alabama at Birmingham at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Convocation Center.
