Established in 1954, the McNay Art Museum serves as Texas’ first museum of modern art. Their collection holds more than 22,000 unique artworks ranging from RenaissanceRenaissance paintings to 21st-century photographs. The museum’s staff and sponsors focus on making art easily accessible to the public, by providing free admission nights and events. Throughout the past few years, the McNay has been hosting yearly “college nights” as a way to encourage students to explore the local art scene. These events provide people the resources to explore their artistic side and be exposed to what San Antonio has to offer.
At the most recent “college night”, on Friday, Sept. 27, there were various stations around the Leeper Auditorium. A variety of food and drink options were provided— described as a “Spice of Life” array by the catering. McNay staff screen printed totes with fun prints for attendees while explaining the process and educating people on how to properly administer ink onto the fabric whilst printing. There was a button-making station and a station for creating Shrinky Dink keychains. The staff were readily available in case anyone had questions, and the crafts were straightforward and fun.
On top of the crafts, there was live music. The McNay is great with spotlighting local bands, and Friday’s lineup consisted of the Rose City Dancers and Floats — who have an album coming out Oct. 9.
Alongside all of the activities planned, the staff encouraged attendees to explore the museum and its exhibitions during the event. There is a courtyard in the center of the museum that was lit up with tables. In the courtyard, one can find more art installations, such as statues and sculptures and can truly appreciate the architecture. It is another piece of art in and of itself and adds to the overall experience.
There are far more opportunities coming up that will allow people to experience the museum and its spirit. Every Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and every first Sunday of the month, the entry fee is waived. Second Thursday is also coming up on Oct. 10, another event with themed art workshops. The museum offers free admission from 4 to 9 p.m. on this evening and food trucks will be outside, along with a DJ.
The McNay Art Museum is honestly worth dedicating an evening towards— as it boasts an incredible collection of artwork, an inviting spirit and a lovely staff. There is such a strong sense of community that comes from this local museum, and it welcomes all.
