Tacos and pan dulce for Saturday breakfast is the perfect way to ensure everyone is having a good time.
This past weekend, Opportunity Home hosted Unity in Culture: A Hispanic Heritage Community Fest at Opportunity Home Park. The festival ran from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
At 10 a.m., the food trucks were still setting up, but anyone looking for food was in luck. The snacks and refreshments area acted as a pleasant surprise to any unassuming guest. At this station, one could acquire some breakfast tacos provided by Bill Millers, pan dulce, chips and beverages complimentary to attendees of the festival.
While enjoying the food, a mariachi band performed a thirty-minute set including traditional mariachi ballads, alongside some Luis Miguel. The performance could be watched from the comfort of shaded tables adorned with vibrant tablecloths and the flags of Latin American nations.
Following the first mariachi group was UTSA’s mariachi accompanied by UTSA Folklorico. The mariachi and Folklorico team drew the attention of the crowds as they took the stage in their orange and navy attire. With the sounds of instruments and shoes tapping along, the group turned heads around the park.
The festival also had an activity area catering towards a younger demographic. Over in the activities, one had the opportunity to decorate a maraca. Pinatas were also being created using tissue paper and toilet paper rolls. If crafts are not of interest, one could also participate in flag-naming trivia or check out the free book table.
The festival was not just a matter of activities and music. The venue also acted as a form of outreach. In the vendor section, various community resources were being discussed. Bibliotech was signing people up for library cards and sharing all the cool new technology available, such as a 3D printer. Jolt initiative was registering people to vote and the Botanical Gardens was informing their upcoming events while handing out admissions passes.
The Unity in Culture festival offered a moment of fresh air to kick off the weekend. With music and performances, one could simply sit and enjoy the beautiful weather with the backdrop of their favorite ballad. The festival also offered the community tons of access to resources to help improve social equity.
