UTSA continued its fall season with a scrimmage against Trinity Valley Community College in the first game of a doubleheader at Roadrunner Field this past weekend. The ballgame ended in a 3-3 tie.
After tying their first scrimmage game of the year, the Roadrunners looked to bounce back after tying Temple College 11-11.
The Cardinals quickly got the upper hand in the top of the first inning. Trinity Valley outfielder Rylie Degeer hit a double to bring her teammate on second base across home plate for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, with senior infielder Camryn Robillard on second base, UTSA senior utility player Jaylen Prichard pounced on a pitch by pitcher Dominique Vargas to hit an RBI double to deep to center field to tie the game 1-1.
After two scoreless innings by both teams, things finally got going again in the bottom of the fifth. The Cardinals substituted Vargas for their new pitcher Makayla Mickey Castillo and the Roadrunners immediately took advantage. UTSA’s Sophomore infielder Kylie Forney hit an infield single to get on first base. Afterward, Prichard also hit an infield single up the middle and Forney got thrown out trying to advance to third. This series of events forced a mound visit by Trinity Valley, boosting the ‘Runners’ confidence.
With sophomore outfielder Taryn Madlock up to bat, Prichard stole second base with ease to put herself in scoring position. Following the stolen base by Prichard, Madlock hit an RBI single over the infielders’ heads to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
After making a spectacular jumping catch at first base to get out of the top of the sixth inning, senior utility player Crislyne Moreno hit a leadoff triple to start the bottom of the sixth. Roadrunner Field erupted as Moreno slid into third base. This set the table for junior infielder Katia Reyes to hit a deep sacrifice fly to bring Moreno home and make it a two run game.
During the top of the seventh with a two run lead, the Roadrunners allowed the bases to get loaded with only one out. This set the table for the Cardinals’ infielder Jaeden Elise Burnham who promptly hit a two run single to tie the game. The Roadrunners were not able to capitalize as they left Prichard stranded on first base and the game came to an end.
UTSA will face off against San Jacinto Community College at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Roadrunner Field.
