At UTSA, there are only 17 intercollegiate sports included in the official athletics program, meaning the chosen sports will receive funding and recognition from the university. This leads to most athletes from both the sports included and excluded to fall under three categories: the student-athletes chosen to play for the university, those who weren’t and those who chose not to.
Despite the differences, one thing remains the same for all of them: their love for sports. To fulfill their passion, the perfect outlet was created: club sports. These allow them to play without the excessive demands that many official student-athletes go through.
It gives those who are not ready to end the connection they have for the sport they play an outlet that offers them many benefits by supporting the growth for physical health, making strong connections and leading many players to grow in all aspects of their college careers.
“The inclusivity fosters a welcoming environment where players can focus on personal growth and the love of the game.” UTSA hockey club founder and vice president Joshua LeComte said.
For the majority of these athletes, club sports is a community more than simply being involved in a club. It is a way for the players to experience college to the fullest while being able to play competitive sports they are involved with.
“This truly gives us a sense of us ‘being’ the club rather than us being a part of the club,” the men’s club soccer president Colin Harper said.
The role of club sports does not end there; it also allows these athletes to gain a sense of independence and responsibility. A majority of club sports do not receive funding from UTSA.
With no real “commitment,” the athletes find a greater sense of responsibility to play their roles in their respective communities.
“Many clubs are run by the students, requiring players to manage practices, fundraise, and coordinate events,” LeComte said.
When it comes to continuing to do something that you love, even at a different level, the amount of importance to these athletes is unchangeable. They all carry the same amount of love and dedication to their sport, and with that, it is enough to continue to pursue even if the path they are on is not the first one they would have chosen.
Club sports is the perfect place for athletes who still carry the dedication for competitive sports to find the best of themselves. It is a community where they can make lifelong friends and career changing connections. It is not just a sport being played by players, it is a family that supports growth in all aspects.
