Last week on Oct. 1, construction in Alamo Plaza officially began. To celebrate this kickoff, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, MD, along with Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai, Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Alamo Trust Inc. Executive Director Dr. Kate Rogers gathered to each speak on the importance of this next chapter for Texas and its future.
In June of 2023, Commissioner Buckingham played an intricate role in obtaining the funding for the Alamo Trust, Inc. An allocated $400 million from state funding was signed off by Governor Greg Abbott and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick to go towards the plans of what is to become the Alamo Visitor Center and Museum.
In a press release from Commissioner Buckingham’s office, she stated, “Beginning construction on the new Alamo Visitor Center and Museum marks a significant milestone in the Alamo Plan. This comprehensive $550 million restoration plan seeks to conserve the Alamo’s 300-year history and the memory of those who fearlessly fought for Texas’ independence sheltered by its sacred walls.”
Plans are to provide guests with an engaging experience through its eight galleries that will span from the early days of the Alamo as a Spanish Mission to the Texas Revolution and the years that followed. The plans are also set to include numerous other projects affecting Alamo Plaza, Alamo Church and the Cenotaph. The property is to stay within the historic Crockett Block. Other features that will be added to enhance visitor experience include a state-of-the-art 4D theater, rooftop event space with panoramic views of San Antonio and modern amenities including a café and gift shop.
Texans and guests can expect to see these changes completed in 2027. The start of construction marks the beginning of a new chapter in protecting the Alamo and its longstanding history.
