On Oct. 16, Liam Payne, the English singer and songwriter known for his role in the boy band One Direction, died at the age of 31 after falling from the balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Buenos Aires police reported that Payne fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel, sustaining “extremely serious injuries.” Medics confirmed his death at the scene. Argentine authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the former One Direction member’s death.
Police responded to an emergency call reporting an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.” Payne had openly discussed his struggles with alcoholism and claimed to have been sober for six months following treatment.
In response to the news of his death, fans flocked to the Casa Sur Hotel from across Buenos Aires, forming lines that spilled into the street. Forensic investigators were seen leaving the hotel where Payne had fallen. Fans created a makeshift memorial, placing candles and bouquets in tribute.
Payne was a beloved member of One Direction, which formed after the group auditioned for “The X Factor” in 2010. They quickly rose to fame, becoming one of the most successful boy bands in history with a dedicated fan base known as “Directioners,” which drew comparisons to Beatlemania.
While officials indicated that Payne’s injuries could account for his death, prosecutors described the case as “suspicious,” suggesting he may have been under the influence of substances at the time. Authorities confirmed he was alone in his hotel room during the incident.
It remains unclear whether Payne’s fall was accidental or intentional. However, the public prosecutor noted the absence of defensive injuries, indicating he might have been in a state of semi or total unconsciousness at the time of the fall.
Buenos Aires police reported that Payne’s hotel room was in disarray with several broken items found. The forensic team also discovered a whiskey bottle, a lighter and a cellphone near the location where Payne’s body was found.
The investigation is ongoing, law enforcement and prosecutors are awaiting the results of a toxicology report.
The remaining members of One Direction put out a statement Thursday, Oct. 17, saying they are “completely devastated” by Payne’s death. “In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever.”
