Since 2016, a small truck located in the parking lot of a liquor store has been making a big impact on the San Antonio community. Marco Cardel opened Mila Coffee on Broadway, naming his business after his daughter. Cardel came to the United States with a dream of running an authentic coffee company. It was not easy for Cardel to start his business, he faced some trouble in the beginning.
“My immigration status was the first challenge. I had no papers when I started,” Cardel said. “I wanted to work at different shops, but my immigration status wouldn’t let me and thank God they didn’t let me do it cause that’s why I ended up doing my own thing.”
Upon walking up to the truck, customers are welcomed with a big smile and an exciting “Hello!” Cardel knows his customers by name, creating a sense of belonging. The truck has a white exterior adorned with traditional designs of cacti, coffee and vaqueros. A big LED sign sits above the truck with bold lettering that reads, “MILA.” Rad stickers reside on the windows, either in support of other small businesses or organizations for a good cause.
The coffee selections at Mila are unique, with beans being supplied by Tweed Coffee. The coffee beans originate from South American countries, such as Peru and Colombia. They offer well-known choices — such as espresso, cortados, cappuccinos, americanos and lattes. Guests can customize their drinks how they want with flavored syrups and alternative milk options. Mila is known for its horchata latte made in-house, which has a balanced sweetness of the horchata and espresso.
Outside of coffee, Mila also hosts a multitude of events — such as run clubs, latte art throwdowns and bike socials. Cardel has built a strong community for those in the San Antonio metro area and continues to share why he loves what he does.
“My favorite memory of opening Mila was getting busy and meeting a lot of new people along the way,” Cardel said.
Mila has extended its business by opening a second location near Make Ready Market, a downtown food hall. This location is a brick-and-mortar with the same great offerings.
