It is no secret that tension has risen from the recent presidential election, more specifically from Gen Z , those born in the late 1990s and early 2000s,- known for being strongly opinionated and dominant on social media around the world, would not go down without a fight throughout the whole presidential campaign and election. But what happens when they start to fight with one another?
Not all of Gen Z voted for Kamala Harris; 51% of Gen Z voted for Harris and 47% voted for Trump, which has caused many to question their friendships. This is all because of the stubbornness of only seeing the Democratic point of view over cherished memories. This emphasizes the fault of many of the younger Democrats; they begin to contradict themselves. It makes one wonder how they can believe in fighting for all equal human rights and not on their close friends’right to vote. They seemingly become unworthy of being in their lives, in a sense, losing value to them.
In a recent survey by USA Today, around 300 people were questioned about whether or not they were capable of maintaining their friendships that voted for the opposing party. 55% who identified as Democrat responded “no”, while only 26% who identified as Republican responded with “no.” With nothing gained from cutting off a close friend other than ignorance and blind self-pride, those who choose to make that decision are the ones in the wrong for the way they preach themselves to not be. To be so blinded by ego to disregard the person a friend voted for is not a loss for them, it is a win. For those to think it is better to remove someone who was there through thick and thin, or those from childhood who they grew up with, simply because they have different political beliefs is nothing short of absurdity.
The lack of understanding is hypocritical and shows the lack of empathy that many within the percentage of Gen Z choose to cover up with it being their “right” to their feelings and actions. Politics are never worth ending a cherished friendship over; just agree to disagree.
