San Antonio is now offering gift cards to those who trade in their firearms. According to MySA, the San Antonio Police Department and the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office have reported that weapons are becoming targets in vehicle break-ins..
District 9 Councilman John Courage began the Voluntary Weapon Exchange (VWE) last year. “That gun that is turned into us will never hurt a human being, will never commit a crime, will never be used to threaten anybody because it will be destroyed,” Courage told MySA. He states that VWE began not only to reduce crime but also to make communities safer by reducing access.
The gift card values vary depending on the weapon traded in. KENS5 reports that $100 will be offered for shotguns and rifles, $150 for handguns and $200 for assault weapons or AR-style automatics. VWE’s goal is to collect 1,000 weapons, with each person being able to turn in up to 10 weapons.
For gun owners who are looking to get rid of their weapons, H-E-B will be hosting a voluntary weapon exchange on Sunday, Nov. 24. This event will take place at Lot B at the Alamodome from 12 p.m.to 5 p.m.
