As Thanksgiving break begins, some Roadrunners begin their trek back home to see family and friends — enjoying the holiday to its fullest. However, since UTSA is largely a commuter school, many Roadrunners will be celebrating Thanksgiving right here in San Antonio. For Roadrunners looking to give back to their local community this holiday season, here are a few Thanksgiving volunteer opportunities to take advantage of over break.
Operation Turkey
Volunteer opportunities with Operation Turkey San Antonio are broken down into two days. On Nov. 27 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., the San Antonio Turkey Tailgate will take place at Sumo Japanese Steakhouse, located at 8342 W I-10. This is where volunteers smoke turkeys and assemble meals in preparation for Operation Turkey.
On Nov. 28 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Operation Turkey will also take place at Sumo Japanese Steakhouse. Spots are filling quickly, but volunteers can register for meal delivery, meal building, meal serving or photography and documentation. Registration information can be found on Operation Turkey San Antonio’s Website.
Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels San Antonio is hosting their annual Thanksgiving Meal Delivery, where volunteers can sign up to deliver hot Thanksgiving meals to senior or disabled neighbors across the Alamo City. Meals on Wheels offers two timeslots for volunteers to pick up their meals for distribution — one from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and another from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Meals on Wheels asks that volunteers arrive no earlier than 10 minutes before their assigned time. Meals will be picked up from their headquarters, located at 2718 Danbury. Registration information can be found on Meals on Wheels San Antonio’s website.
Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner
Started by San Antonio Restaurateur Raul Jimenez in 1979, the Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner currently serves more than 25,000 senior and less fortunate San Antonioans. The event has grown into one of the largest Thanksgiving charity events in the nation. Staffed by more than 3,000 volunteers, the event takes place at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center, located at 900 Market St.
On Nov. 28, volunteers can register for delivery shifts from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., or kitchen shifts from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is first come first serve, and spots are filling quickly. Information on registration can be found at the Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner’s website.
