Shen Yun 2013: A performance reliving China’s 5,000 years of culture

Shen Yun has it all—an orchestra, vocal performers and dancers that incorporate folk, ethnic and story-based dance.

The performance features ornate costumes set along the backdrop of China’s landscape. Each performer practices the classical style of dance alongside an orchestra that plays tranquil songs from China’s heritage.

The show was originally arranged by a group of classical Chinese artists in 2006. The United States 2013 tour has been performing since December of 2012 and will continue through May 12th. The entire world tour covers the areas of the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and South America.

San Antonio had once before been graced with the awe-inspiring performers, musicians and singers back in May of 2012.

Jeff Cook, Lila Cockrell Theatre’s booking manager, states that the company, Epoctimes, an international media organization, were the ones that approached the theatre with hope of hosting the Shen Yun show once more. “They had such a great reception last year and they had such a great turn out, they wanted to return.”

Shen Yun has three dance and orchestra companies: New York, International and Touring. The show has sold-out in venues across North America and Europe.

Hundreds of performers engage the audience with their immaculate dances and elaborate backdrop scenes, which are bright and realistic. The originally composed music complements the on-stage ambiance and performances.

The Shen Yun performance is completely different every year. The costumes, dances and music are all original and newly created for every annual tour. This is their seventh world tour. The show seems to have gained popularity every year and has received some of the highest reviews regarding theatrical performance.

This year, Shen Yun explores the rich tapestry of Chinese culture. New ethnic dances, never-before-seen mini-dramas that reflect ancient values all with themes of wisdom and loyalty and of course a few laughs.

The critically acclaimed Shen Yun Performing Arts show, while on its 2013 world tour, will be in San Antonio at the Lila Cockrell Theatre (200 East Market St.) from April 14-17.

Performance times vary for everyday. Ticket prices range from $60-$140.
