Edwin Beltran, a 22-year-old student at UTSA, received a posthumous degree during the school’s Fall 2024 Commencement ceremony on Saturday. Beltran died in a tragic accident in August and was close to finishing his undergrad.
The degree was presented during the Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design graduation at the Alamodome to recognize Beltran’s academic dedication. Beltran’s parents received his degree with applause from the audience, many of whom stood to honor the memory of the San Marcos native. His father, Oscar Beltran, walked across the stage with a large portrait of his son in hand.
A total of 22 members of Beltran’s family attended the ceremony to honor him during commencement. University faculty praised Beltran’s academic efforts and extended their condolences to his family. According to Beltran’s obituary, Beltran was consumed by a love of learning and dedication to putting what he learned into practice.
“Colleagues and classmates knew Edwin as the funny, loving and thoughtful individual who could light up a room with warmth and good heart. His presence was a source of comfort, laughter, and peace and security that when he was around, you knew you would be safe,” said his obituary. The commencement was a time for celebration and remembrance, a testament to what Beltran achieved throughout his time as a UTSA student.
Beltran’s story has sparked conversation within the UTSA community and beyond, from education to the support of family to his perseverance.
