After approving its construction back in March, UTSA finally broke ground on the new, $35 million Basketball and Volleyball Training Facility this past Wednesday.
This new facility, along with the openings of the Park West Athletic Complex and Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence (RACE) facility, aim to “further promote the academic success, health, wellness and performance of the university’s student-athletes,” according to UTSA Today.
On Wednesday, Dec. 18, a groundbreaking event was held to commence the new Basketball and Volleyball Training Facility. Going forward, the UTSA men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs will conduct their daily operations at this facility once built. It will span over 53,000 square feet and will cost more than $35 million to complete. The facility is funded by a partnership with Bexar County and the City of San Antonio, each investing $5 million. The building will feature amenities for the athletes such as two NCAA practice courts, locker rooms, team lounges, a weight room, coaches offices, athletic training hydrotherapy space and team meeting rooms.
“We had this conversation about what athletics meant to this institution and what it would mean to our community,” UTSA President Taylor Eighmy said regarding a past discussion with Red McCombs. “We both agreed in about two nanoseconds that athletics is the front porch of UTSA.”
The basketball and volleyball training facility will be located next to the RACE facility on Barshop Blvd. and is slated for completion in November of 2026.
