On Jan. 20, 2025, President Donald Trump was sworn into office. Unsurprisingly, his inauguration speech contained inaccurate information and promises he never intends to keep.
“For American citizens,” Trump declared, “January 20th, 2025, is Liberation Day. To the Black and Hispanic communities, I’ve heard your voices in the campaign, and I look forward to working with you in the years to come.”
This story has been written before: In his 2017 inauguration speech, he claimed, “January 20th 2017, will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again[…]The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer.”
Despite President Trump claiming he is for the people, the people have not seen this reflected in any regard. According to AmericanProgress.org, during his first presidential term, “President Trump asked Congress to cut funding from the Legal Services Corporation, a nonprofit that supports legal aid programs across the United States and whose client demographic is four percent African American and 17.9 percent Hispanic.” His actions showcase a clear disregard for certain populations of the American public and demonstrate his inability to act in everyone’s best interest.
In his 2025 speech, Trump also discussed the recent wildfires in L.A., claiming that the “country can no longer deliver basic services in times of emergency[…]That’s going to change.” Despite Trump’s bold promise, America has already seen how it will play out through the Trump administration’s rejection of the California government’s request for federal disaster relief funds to help the state recover from the wildfires in 2020.
Throughout his campaign, Trump rallied the lower class with promises to “bring prices down” on day one — a promise he reiterated in his inauguration speech. This was his most popular lie as millions of Americans felt let down by rising costs under former President Biden, clinging to the hope that if Trump were to be president then this would change. America does not need to wait to see how the economy will develop under President Trump, as high costs of living is nothing new to the president.
He addressed this issue in his 2017 inauguration speech as well, claiming that “the wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes. Every decision on trade, on taxes, will be made to benefit American workers and families.” Despite his promise to look out for Americans, the high cost of living in 2025 is his fault. During his first term he passed a massive tax cut for wealthy business owners and rolled back important worker protections — dismantling key regulations that protect the pay of low- and middle-income workers.
History has shown where Trump’s priorities lie, and they are not with the citizens who voted for him. The people have been deceived and let down before, this term they need to take a stand and stay informed on the policies being enacted, and be angry when he strays from his campaign points. The American people should not stand blindly by Trump as he ignores the promises he gave.
