The San Antonio City Council’s Community Health Committee has voted to not move forward in distributing $100,000 of public funds to pay for out-of-state travels for people seeking abortions.
Councilwoman and mayoral candidate Melissa Cabello Havrda introduced a Council Consideration Request to provide additional funding for out-of-state abortion travel. Initially, the CCR was suggested by Mayor Ron Nirenberg to adjust a funding omission from the Reproductive Justice Fund that was approved in November.
The Reproductive Justice Fund passed and set aside $500,000 for reproductive health education, contraceptive access and STD testing doula training; however, no funding was reserved for abortion travel. The purpose for additional funding was to provide logistical support, such as hotel and travel expenses.
“Access to safe, affordable health care is a fundamental right. This was a chance for San Antonio to take a stand for the women who rely on us,” Havrda said.
Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito from District 7 voted against the proposal because it would be using taxpayer money.
“Given the city’s approaching budget deficit, it would be in the interest of all parties for these reproductive rights organizations to meet their fundraising goal without relying on the city’s taxpayer money,” Gavito said.
Laura Molinar, a representative from the immigrant reproductive justice organization Sueños Sin Fronteras, advocates for the passing of the legislation despite possible legal repercussions.
“I acknowledge that some of the committee members may have reservations about this proposal and may fear the potential threats of litigation,” Molinar said. “However, our community is calling upon you as our elected leaders to demonstrate the courage and commitment necessary to advocate for this vital support in San Antonio.”
