“One of Them Days,” directed by Lawerence Lamont, hit theaters Jan. 17, and it proves itself to be a staple of the comedy genre. This film depends on the heartwarming chemistry between the two main characters and the charisma of their personas in addition to the plot’s pacing.
When two best friends are left in a panic after their rent money is stolen, they race to figure out a solution to avoid immediate eviction. Throughout the film, obstacles continue to stand in their way — making an already difficult situation even more impossible. Keke Palmer plays Dreaux — a determined, hard worker striving to make a name for herself as a manager. Opposite her, SZA plays Alyssa, a spiritually inclined artist who puts her trust in the wrong people. While the film excels at making audiences laugh, it subtly addresses a real issue: the lack of opportunity in underrepresented communities and how that ultimately leads individuals to limit themselves.
Initially, the expectations for the film were pretty high, garnering excitement for SZA’s actorial debut. However, one quickly realizes the true star is Palmer and her infectious charisma. It shines through the character, coinciding with the style of her humor and making the movie as funny as it is. In comparison to Palmer’s performance, SZA was okay; nonetheless, the two eccentric characters’ chemistry is undeniable. They showcase the power of friendship, trust, resilience and beautifully pushing beyond one’s limitations. It is evident that the heart of the story is their sisterhood. The bond carries the movie on its back.
Besides the two leads, the supporting characters amplified the humor of the scenes by introducing unique personalities with witty dialogue. When certain plot points became repetitive, the supporting characters brought the ridiculousness back in a creative way. Although the film defines itself as a feel-good comedy, the utilization of humor to represent a community of creatives often limited in opportunity brings a refreshing reality to it. Though the situation and plot were exaggerated, the women of the film represent very real communities filled with talented people never given the opportunity to showcase their gifts.
For those looking for a quick watch and a good laugh with friends or family, “One of Them Days” is highly recommended. It proves that two successful Black women can lead a box office hit with a lasting impact on its audience — and on the fans who relate to them.
