The Texas-based grocery store chain, HEB, celebrates its 120-year anniversary by giving 120 lucky Texans a year’s worth of free groceries through its Big Game sweepstakes, announced in a Super Bowl ad. Kickstarting with country singer Aaron Watson, HEB delivered a performance to celebrate the chain’s 120-year anniversary. “At H-E-B, we are deeply humbled and grateful to have served communities across Texas for 120 years,” said HEB Group Vice President of Marketing, Ashwin Nathan
HEB was founded in Kerrville, Texas, as the “C.C. Butt Grocery Store” by Florence Thornton Butt in 1905 after her husband fell ill with tuberculosis and could no longer provide for their family. As part of a charge and delivery method, the Butt’s youngest son, Howard Edward Butt, had to deliver all produce by wagon. Years later, upon Butt’s return from serving the Navy, the family business was handed to him in 1919. The business has grown significantly in Texas since its wagon delivery system.
With its headquarters in San Antonio, HEB owns 339 stores in the U.S. and 61 in Mexico. The grocery chain has been ranked the No.1 grocer in the U.S. by the Dunnhumby Retailer Preference Index for the fourth time in eight years, beating Costco and Aldi.
The grocery chain is celebrating its anniversary by announcing a raffle in which 120 lucky contestants will have the opportunity to receive a year’s worth of free groceries. People can participate in the giveaway by entering the same access coupons and offers in the My H-E-B mobile app.
