UTSA softball picked up its second win of the Roadrunner Classic against St. Thomas University Saturday, winning 3-2 at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners (9-3) took an early lead over the Tommies (5-6), scoring one run off two hits in the first inning. Although they struggled to combat a dominant pitcher’s strikes in the following five innings, the ‘Runners made their last stand in the seventh inning. With bases fully loaded in the bottom of the seventh, freshman utility Sabrina Wick drove a ball down center field to bring home two runners.
“She’s an incredible athlete,” coach Vann Stuedeman said of Wick. “It was awesome that the kids just kept fighting. We’ve been talking about winning the late innings, and we’ve been really focused on that. Their determination to stay focused takes a lot of grit and a lot of guts to come back and have a great at-bat and walk us off.”
With junior pitcher Katia Reyes on second and sophomore catcher Kalee Rochinski on first and down to their last out of the game, senior outfielder Lindsey Davis stepped up to bat. Davis got hit in the shoulder on the first pitch and walked straight to first base. Accompanied by fully loaded bases, the left-handed Wick stepped up to bat and launched a ball up center field. While the Tommies scrambled to pick up the ball, earning an error in the process, Reyes and Rochinski sprinted home to finish on top.
“I love ending the game that way,” Wick said. “I think those types of games are so much fun. I loved starting off the game because I know when we start the offense strong, it really helps our pitchers to start off.
“I was looking up the middle because I knew I wanted to score two runs in, but I didn’t want to overthink anything. I was just looking to hit the ball hard and low. I didn’t want to hit it in the air and possibly end the game that way, so I was looking hard on the ground.”
Wick also scored the first run for the Roadrunners.
When senior utility Crislyne Moreno stepped up to bat, pitcher Kameron Monson spotted senior utility Jaylen Prichard taking off from first base. Monson launched a ball to second baseman Ruby Moore, but the ball fell short and hit the ground before ricocheting toward right field. Prichard took the opportunity to round second as she headed toward third while Wick ran through home to put the first point on the board.
St. Thomas pitcher Ella Cook capitalized on a one-point deficit in the top of the fourth and leveled the playing field at 1-1 with a home run. Monson returned in the bottom of the fifth and shot a ball over the center field wall to earn the Tommies a second home run.
UTSA will continue to host the Roadrunner Classic as it takes on Sam Houston State University at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Roadrunner Field.
