UTSA baseball defeated Houston Christian University 12-1 on Tuesday at Roadrunner Field.
Following a scoreless first inning, the Roadrunners (6-3) scored six runs in the bottom of the second. The Huskies (4-3) got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, but failed to drive in any runs throughout the remainder of the contest.
“Our starting pitching was good, and we swung the bats well,” coach Pat Hallmark said as to the reason why the team won.
Junior pitcher James Hubbard got the start on the bump for UTSA for the first time since the team took on Baylor University. The Scottsdale Community College transfer allowed three hits across five innings while tossing seven strikes.
“James went out there and was good,” Hallmark said. “He threw a lot of fastballs and a lot of strikes. I think he was up to 95 [miles-per-hour] tonight.”
Freshman utility Caden Miller got the ‘Runners on the board first with an RBI triple that scored junior designated hitter Broc Parmer and junior infielder Ty Hodge. Junior outfielder Drew Detlefsen picked up his first home run of the game when he launched one over the center field wall, allowing senior catcher Lorenzo Morresi and senior infielder Norris McClure to touch home base while Detlefsen rounded the diamond.
In the following inning, senior outfielder Mason Lytle added to the Roadrunners’ lead with an RBI single up the center of the field, allowing freshman infielder Jordan Ballin to score.
The Huskies lone run came from infielder Trevor Roper, who grounded out to Hodge and cleared the way for the runner on third to score.
UTSA responded the following inning with Detlefsen’s second home run of the night that, once again, scored Morresi and McClure.
“It felt great. It fired me up to see it, and it felt really good. Hopefully I can keep it going,” Detlefsen said of his reaction to his second home run.
Sophomore catcher Whitt Joyce came in to pinch hit for Morresi in the bottom of the seventh and scored Miller and Parmer with an RBI triple — enacting the run rule.
UTSA notched 13 hits as a team with Detlefsen and Lytle tying for the team lead in individual hits with three a piece. The UTSA pitching rotation — consisting of Hubbard, senior Jake Cothran and junior Connor Kelly — allowed just five hits while dishing out seven strikes. The Roadrunners have now outscored their opponents 53-7 over the past four days.
“Everybody was so jumpy at UTA and anxious, now we can see people are calmer,” Hallmark said. “The swings are dangerous right now. We’re in a good spot.”
Miller and junior outfielder Tye Odom suffered injuries against Houston Christian. While Miller returned in tonight’s game, Hallmark says that Odom’s injury “doesn’t look good.”
UTSA faces a quick turnaround with Oakland University scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Roadrunner Field.
