The women’s tennis team swept the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley 7-0 on Tuesday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
Reigniting their win streak against UTRGV, the Roadrunners (16-2) led the Vaqueros (5-6) to their 22nd San Antonio demise. Getting a jump start over their opponents by dominating during doubles, the ‘Runners defeated the Vaqueros on all six courts to quickly close out their morning match.
“Today was good, we opened with a lot of effort,” junior Letizia Corsini said. “We focused on moving our legs and just played our tennis. That’s what got us to win 7-0 today.”
Adopting the same point-earning move, sophomore Ekua Youri and Corsini maneuvered their volleys to position themselves closer to the net. From there, the pair took turns driving in cross-court shots to beat senior Kristal Dule and junior Yaiza Vazquez 6-1 to finish first in doubles on court one. This was the first doubles that the pair has won together this season.
Freshman duo Aoka Nagasawa and Natalia Castaneda Guerrero closed out their doubles 6-4 to secure the first point.
“That was the plan today,” Corsini said of hers and Youri’s cross-court shots. “It’s hard to keep the ball along the baseline because you never know what’s gonna happen. Our plan was to take up the time from the opponents and try to crush it.”
Corsini moved to court two to take on Vazquez for a second time, and vanquished her in nearly the same amount of time she took to do so in doubles. The Italian defeated her Spanish adversary 6-2, 6-0 in a near sweep to finish first in singles as well.
“The key to today’s match was to focus on my legs,” Corsini said. “I tried to stay focused on every point and take her time away. It was windy so I didn’t really want to make [Vazquez] play more so I just tried to close the point.”
Junior Arina Babenko took on sophomore Madeleine Joffe and quickly closed out her singles match 6-1, 6-3. The Russian remains undefeated in singles, boasting a 15-0 record this season.
Youri closed out her singles 6-4, 6-3 and sophomore Vittoria Baccino won 6-1, 6-4. Nagasawa won 6-4, 6-1 and Castaneda Guerrero closed out the matches to win 6-2, 6-4.
UTSA will play Tyler Junior College at 10 a.m. Thursday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
