The Democratic Party has declined in popularity, and some suggest a fundamental change within the party. The 2024 presidential election campaign and results are a big reason people have disregarded the party since. With a campaign focusing on keeping a centrist image to attract undecided voters and their financial contributors, it seems the Democratic Party has lost its appeal to many voters who rooted for more leftist ideologies.
Instead of adjusting to the progressive views so many young voters demand, the Democratic Party has decided to please those centrist voters in hopes of gaining a larger demographic. In 2020, about 52%-55% of voters ages 18-29 were in hope of a turnaround in politics after experiencing the Trump era. Coalitions like Gen-Z for Change were established to provide a more progressive view on certain policies. Since 2020, the Democratic Party has shown to be a disappointment for many of the young voters who believed former president Joe Biden would provide the change America needed.
Sometime between 2016 and now, the political landscape of America hit a turning point in progressivism. With the Democratic Party failing to deliver promising change and other political figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders breathing down their necks, the party has lost enthusiasm from its voters.
The Democratic Party needs to reevaluate their priorities and deliver a clear progressive vision for what they stand for. Democratic voters, especially young voters, want to see politicians, like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or Sanders, who stand up for humanity and have given the people a clear vision of what they believe the U.S. should focus on. Democratic voters do not want a party that fails to provide a clear ideology and tailors priorities to please financial contributors.
With issues like the Palestinian conflict being one of the main topics of discussion, Democrats failed to provide a clear opinion on it and have decided to keep it centrist, which cost them a lot of supporters.
Continuing forward, the Democratic Party needs to realign itself and remember what it stands for. Progressive issues are on the rise this year, and Democrats need to become the party of the people, instead of the party of puppets. Bringing back a strong Democratic government could change the current political landscape, but it is in the hands of the people to continue fighting for social change in the U.S. and to advocate for progressive policies to become reality.
