UTSA baseball defeated Texas State University 12-9 on Tuesday at Roadrunner Field.
In front of a record-breaking crowd, the Roadrunners (20-7, 2-1 AAC) jumped out to an early lead over the bitter-rival Bobcats (11-13, 3-3 SBC). Junior outfielder Drew Detlefsen registered seven RBIs and he — along with the reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Week senior catcher Andrew Stucky — helped the ‘Runners earn their 14th home win of the season.
“A lot of the [energy] came from our atmosphere,” Detlefsen said. “The fans really packed this place out and the momentum really benefited us tonight. You could feel it throughout the stadium.”
After junior infielder Cade Sadler scored unearned in the first inning, Detlefsen added to the Roadrunners’ lead with an RBI double into right-center field that allowed senior infielder James Taussig, junior infielder Ty Hodge and freshman infielder Jordan Ballin to score. Stucky drove an RBI single down the left field line to close out the inning.
Stucky picked up his second RBI of the night in the fourth after he doubled into left field, allowing Detlefsen to reach home. Detlefsen registered an RBI double of his own in the fifth before eventually making his way home a few plays later off a wild pitch. Freshman utility Caden Miller brought UTSA into double digit runs with a sacrifice fly into right field that allowed Sadler to score.
Senior pitcher Gunnar Brown got the start on the mound for UTSA, which marked the first time junior pitcher James Hubbard did not start on a Tuesday. Brown lasted five innings and allowed zero runs on two hits while tossing seven strikes.
Texas State scored nine runs in the final three innings to dress up the scoreboard but the Roadrunner rotation eventually closed out the game and sent the Bobcats back up I-35 with a loss.
“I told the guys in the little post-game meeting to celebrate,” coach Pat Hallmark said. “A win is a win. They’re not easy to get, especially against this team. It’s a friendly rivalry — at least on the field. Our fans don’t like each other but we respect those guys.”
Detlefsen led with four hits and seven RBIs, which is an individual season-high for the ‘Runners in 2025. UTSA improved its all-time record against Texas State to 41-63 and has now won its last two meetings against the Bobcats. The team has reached 20 wins on the season with three of those wins coming against ranked opponents and is currently receiving votes in the NCBWA Division I poll.
UTSA will continue conference play against Florida Atlantic University. Game one of the weekend series is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at Roadrunner Field.
