Looney Tunes is a beloved cartoon for people of all ages but the cartoon’s newest movie did not necessarily represent the cartoon very well. Starring iconic characters Porky Pig and Daffy Duck the movie was discombobulated with inconsistent animation, storyline, and detail.
Movie starts off kind of like The Iron Giant (1999) with this classic sci-fi intro with a Clark Kent 1950s looking scientist in an observatory. He then discovers a green asteroid crash on earth and is understandably so in shock. The transition from this scene was confusing and awkward.
Apparently P. pig and D. Duck are lifelong friends that were raised together on a farm with farmer Jim. They do make references to the long history of the Looney tunes animation style especially when they are babies in the beginning, referring to the early 2000 show “Baby Looney Tunes”. The introduction of P. Pig and D. Duck were not paired well with the animation of farmer Jim being a still photo with only his mouth moving.
It is unclear how the transition from scientist discovering a green orb to P. Pig and D. Duck were raised on a farm. Farmer Jim leaves the farm leading to the core of the movie’s story which is the two partners in crime trying to upkeep the home they have been left behind with from farmer Jim.
- Duck is portrayed more dumb than usual cartoons from the past. The facial expressions of the characters are extremely exaggerated too. There are still subtle iconic facial expressions of the character that do sneak into their pattern of reactions in the movie though.
- Pig and D. Duck need to find a job to keep their home so during a montage of job hunting a “cartoon episode” was introduced during the movie titled “Raise the Roof” but it fell flat. The humor in the movie was either stupid and hit a dead end or they relied on butt jokes to try and amuse the theater.
They eventually find a job working at a gum factory called “Goodie gum”. They begin work at the factory and out of nowhere a switch of animation styles occurs mid movie for a quick montage to take place similar to the Disney movie “The Incredibles” intro with jazz playing in the background during their job working scene. A consistent occurrence of the movie is catching the audience off guard with random moment such as this one
- Pig finds a love interest and her name is Petunia Pig which leads to more confusion as to what the movie is about. Apparently the love interest is a flavor scientist at the factory that P. Pig and D. Duck work at. Which leads to the rising action of it all, the movie’s premise is about chewing gum that was contaminated by an alien from space which was the green orb from earlier. The Scientist from the beginning of the movie is reintroduced as a zombie but it is never deliberately confirmed if he ate the contaminated chewing gum.
Pedestrians of the surrounding area of the factory obtained the gum once they released a new flavor and then turned into zombies themselves. The flavor scientist conjures up a formula to cure the contaminated gum that turned people into zombies but the spread of the zombie apocalypse is so big that P. Pig and D. Duck needs to go to space to project the cure to earth as a massive laser.
The earth is saved by the three characters which leads to the observation that the movie title “The Day that Earth Blew up” is a play on words with bubble gum being the problem that needs to be popped.
Overall animated cartoon movies have become exaggerated and fast-paced, making it hard to keep your popcorn and soda down. Due to the lack of tameness to the cartoons and respect to the animation’s legacy, I would not recommend watching this movie.
