Music has the power to inspire, but more than that, it can paint the listener in its wonderful embrace. This was evident during The Hues of Harmony, a flute recital by Lauren Garcia held on March 27. Performed in the UTSA Recital Hall on Main Campus, and featuring works by François-Joseph Gossec, Vincent Persichetti, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach and Georges Hüe. Garcia was accompanied by special guests Alesia Bridgewski on piano and Jazmine Dearlove on flute.
The performance commenced with the popular flute piece “Tambourin (1794)” by François-Joseph Gossec. Garcia was accompanied by Bridgewski on the piano. Together, they championed the song’s lively nature. With its fast-paced tempo and staccato notes, the audience was left keen on its melody.
It was followed by “Parable XII for Solo Piccolo (1973)” composed by Vincent Persichetti. Garcia, performing the piece as a solo, radiantly owned the stage. She effortlessly ascended the piece’s ladder of high notes with melodic grace.
After this performance was “Duet No. 1 in E minor, F.54 (1741)” composed by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, the composition, meant for two flutes, is a part of a set of six duets and features movements in the style of Telemann and Quantz. Garcia was joined by Dearlove on the flute. Both are strong as they tackle the three movements: Allegro, Larghetto and Vivace.
The performance of “Fantaisie for Flute and Piano (1913)” composed by Georges Hüe, was the last of the show. Fantasia, the ingenious and imaginative instrumental composition, can best be characterized by its distortion, exaggeration and elusiveness. Garcia, rejoined with Bridgewski on piano, undergoes this daunting piece and exits on the other side of it successfully. Together, they trek through the song’s evasive nature, confidently leading the audience. Garcia’s unwavering spirit is felt amongst the crowd, leaving individuals feeling safe in her performance.
At the song’s conclusion, there is an eruption of applause thanking her for the magical journey undertaken. A deep appreciation for Garcia is evident with family members, fellow students and onlookers all gathering to congratulate her.
The “Hues of Harmony” was a performance like no other, and its journey inspired the audience.
