In an effort to seek more attention, Morgan Wallen’s latest controversy came in his second appearance on SNL last Saturday as he left the stage almost immediately when the cast signed off. While it is unclear why the country star decided to abruptly leave, many are poking fun at him, especially after his Instagram story post with a photo of him on a private plane captioned “Get me to God’s country.”
Walking off the stage early breaks the show’s long-standing tradition of cast members and guests celebrating their work post-show. While this is not the biggest issue, it is ridiculous.
Some fans claim it is to protest the cancellation of Wallen’s first SNL appearance due to a video of the singer breaking COVID-19 protocols by partying without masks and kissing multiple women. Even if this were true, it would be moronic; if he truly wanted to protest NBC, he could have just not shown up.
While the country singer’s post may seem unrelated, it begs to ask the question of what he meant. To most, this comes off as Wallen giving the middle finger to the liberal SNL cast and crew — and New York as a whole. The irony of a grown man running to his private jet crying, “Get me to God’s Country,” like he is under attack, is not lost. This is not the first time Wallen has been in hot water for his actions, and they are also the reason why his first SNL appearance was canceled.
Wallen’s behavior is nothing new, and has been a pattern throughout his career. In 2021, a year after his COVID-19 festivities, another video surfaced of Wallen shouting the N-word. Despite his racist past, he has managed to hold onto his fame. In fact, after the video came out, his album sales surged. In 2024, the country singer pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor reckless endangerment after throwing a chair off a rooftop bar. “The Voice” alumnus has also been charged for public intoxication, disorderly conduct and driving under the influence.
Wallen’s actions only continue to highlight his passion for stirring the pot, and his recent SNL stunt adds fuel to the fire. Whether it is his past behavior, his legal trials and tribulations or his histrionic posts, his gestures are a constant reach to rile up critics while exempting himself from responsibility. While there is no confirmation for his SNL exit or social media posts, it is clear that Wallen has chosen to lean into his controversial persona rather than move away from it.
