UTSA softball dropped its weekend series 1-9, 4-12, 3-12 against the University of North Texas at Lovelace Stadium in Denton, Texas.
Taking a tumble from their previous win, the Roadrunners (15-22, 2-13 AAC) started the weekend strong but continued their scoring struggles in the middle innings as they took early losses against the Mean Green (28-12, 10-5 AAC). The first and third match lasted five innings, as UTSA was unable to get past North Texas, with difficulty both on the mound and at the plate. North Texas has now won nine consecutive series against the ‘Runners.
Game one
The game looked to be hopeful at the start as UTSA took the lead by one, but ultimately the game ended in a tough loss as the Mean Green shut the Roadrunners out for the rest of the game.
Freshman utility Sabrina Wick kicked things off at the top of the first inning when she singled on the first pitch of the game. Being quick in between the bases, Wick didn’t take long to get into scoring position. Senior utility Jaylen Prichard stepped up to bat, and after a foul ball, Wick rounded home to take the first and only point for the Roadrunners.
Game two
UTSA managed to stay up by four until the fourth inning, when North Texas scored their first point and overtook the Roadrunners in the fifth.
Prichard was the first base runner of the game for UTSA at the top of the fourth with the first point coming from a solo-home run by sophomore catcher Kalee Rochinski. Junior pitcher Katia Reyes in the batter’s box, both Prichard and Rochinski scored for the Roadrunners, taking advantage of a North Texas error. Immediately after, senior outfielder Lindsey David ran home from a bunt hit, earning UTSA’s final point of the game.
The Mean Green held the ‘Runners back from scoring in the fifth and sixth inning as they tagged on 11 runs, putting themselves ahead by eight to finish the game.
The Roadrunners picked up three errors in the duration of the match.
Game three
Ending the finale with another run-rule, the Mean Green drew blood immediately in the first, compiling six runs and making it nearly impossible for the ‘Runners to recover. Despite UTSA’s efforts in the third and fourth inning, the outcome was a familiar one.
Senior infielder Camryn Robillard scored UTSA’s first point in the third inning after a groundout by Prichard on the second pitch. In the following inning, senior utility Crislyne Moreno and junior utility Madison Hornback walked just before Robillard stepped up to hit a double RBI.
The Roadrunners trailed North Texas in hits with six in comparison to their 10.
UTSA will travel to face off against Baylor University at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Getterman Stadium.
